What is thermal runaway in electric vehicles? It refers to an uncontrolled chain reaction of exothermic reactions occurring inside the battery of an electric vehicle. When the heat generated by a cell exceeds the rate of heat dissipation, the temperature rises exponentially, releasing large amounts of flammable gas that can spread to adjacent cells within seconds, ultimately leading to a fire or explosion.

Although rare, such incidents, once they occur, develop at a speed and cause far greater damage than fires in traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, thus being considered a core safety hazard for electric vehicles.

There are four main triggering factors for thermal runaway: physical damage; electrical abuse; thermal abuse; and manufacturing defects and aging. These causes often amplify each other. Например, minor damage may only trigger catastrophic consequences during subsequent charging.
